President Trump granted rare dinner in China’s Forbidden City

President Trump is being treated like a royal during his visit to China, and received a rare dinner inside the country’s most famed imperial palace.

Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday as part of his 12-day tour of Asia, and was greeted by a small army of children waving American and Chinese flags as part of an elaborate welcoming ceremony.

The President, who welcomed his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to his resort Mar-a-Lago earlier this year, later said he was having a “great time” in the Middle Kingdom after watching a dance performance.

Trump is also the first U.S. President to be given a state dinner in the Forbidden City, an elaborate palace in the center of Beijing used for centuries by China’s ruling dynasty.

The unusual amount of pomp and circumstance is believed to be part of China’s efforts to flatter Trump and gloss over American criticisms on trade and the continued development of the nuclear program in its neighbor North Korea.

An imperial tone to Xi’s presidency, confirmed for another term at his party’s conference last month, has previously attracted Trump’s admiration.

“Now some people might call him the king,” the commander-in-chief said of the leader of the authoritarian regime last month.
