Phillips: Collegiate Esports are on the rise but will have to figure out how to be more appealing and welcoming to female gamers

“I want to emphasize ‘varsity’ because to these institutions, there is no structural difference between their Esports department and their athletics department, or the teams competing under those different departments,” said Michael Brooks, Executive Director of NACE. “These are student-athletes. They have scholarships. They have dedicated Esports arenas on campus where they practice, compete, and meet. They have full-time or part-time head coaches, a recorded path to graduation, minimum GPA requirements, and for all intense and purposes they are treated just like a basketball player.”
