American medical student pleads guilty to attempted murder of U.S. diplomat stationed in Mexico

Vice Consul Christopher Ashcroft, who survived the shooting with the bullet still lodged in his spine, told FBI agents from his hospital bed that he noticed Zafar bird-dogging him as he left his gym on Avenida Vallarta on January 6, 2017. The diplomat said went to pay the attendant in the gym parking lot, but noticed the Chino Hills man tailing him. He headed for a crowded area until Zafar dropped out of sight, then Ascroft returned his car, according to a hospital bed interview with FBI Agent David DiMarco.
