Yet in this moment of extreme crisis for the Catholic Church, I’m convinced we must. Not dogma — dogma, to a believer, is beyond question. But lay members must question the faith we’ve put into church management, into clericalism and hierarchy, into accepting the sort of secrecy that has allowed such horrific sexual abuse to be covered up for untold decades. Lay Catholics have to hold the clergy to account, right here, right now.
