Van Wagenen is certainly not the first agent to cross over to the team side. Dave Stewart left his agency to be the Diamondbacks GM from 2014-16 and in the NBA, Rob Pelinka is the current GM of the Lakers. But it will be an interesting career pivot for Van Wagenen and it will create some interesting situations for the Mets. Perhaps Van Wagenen is best remembered by Mets fans for having called out the organization at the All-Star break on behalf of deGrom. In statements made to reporters, Van Wagenen said that the Mets would be wise to either extend their ace at the time or trade him. If not, Van Wagenen then implied, deGrom would not be a happy camper with what he called the Mets’ “current inertia,” as he remained under team control through 2020.
