Mets giving Dominic Smith a shot to get back to majors as an outfielder

“We don’t have many outfielders . . . the way he’s been moving around, the way he’s been working, he’s a really good athlete, he does a great job with really catching the ball at first base. We were all just talking about it the other day, with the injuries we’ve had, it makes some sense to go out in right field and get some reps, so he can be an option at times,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. “We obviously have some really good outfielders in the major leagues. We have guys that can play first base — Wilmer (Flores), (Adrian Gonzalez) and (Jay) Bruce at the major-league level. This only gives Dom another option to make it back up here and contribute.”
