Madden: Brian Cashman’s Machado call is part of his process … nothing more, nothing less

That’s not to say, however, the Yankees haven’t been watching the Rays closely and are starting to wonder if, in the absence of any No. 1 or 2 starters on the market, the way to go might just be Tampa Bay’s “Opener Day” plan in which they use a starting pitcher for 1-2 innings (in many cases hard-throwing righty Ryne Stanek) just to go through the batting order once, then patch it together with 4-5 more pitchers to get them through the game, with the heart of the opposing team’s order seldom seeing the same pitcher twice. I like to call it the “Bum of the Inning” plan since none of these Rays pitchers are good enough to warrant being used for multiple innings. But in these limited stints, for the most part, they’re getting the job done.
