It will take a trio of voices to take over for Mike Francesa, but only one to replace Craig Carton.
WFAN host Boomer Esiason announced on his morning show Wednesday that fill-in host Gregg Giannotti will be getting comfortable in Carton’s old chair following Carton’s arrest and subsequent resignation from the FAN in September.
The duo’s new show, “Boomer and Gio,” will debut on Jan. 2.
Esiason also confirmed a Daily News report from earlier this week that Chris Carlin, Bart Scott and Maggie Gray would be succeeding Francesa in the afternoon drive slot when he leaves the station on Dec. 15. Their show will also debut Jan. 2.
Ex-host Craig Carton: I had ‘legitimate ticket-selling business’
Giannotti, who currently co-hosts the “Gio and Jones” morning show on CBS Sports Radio, has strong ties to WFAN that date back over a decade.
After interning at the station in 2005, Giannotti rose through the ranks to become a producer for the midday show hosted by Joe Beningo and Evan Roberts. Giannotti hosted his first show for WFAN in 2008 before starting as a night host for Pittsburgh’s The Fan in 2010.
Since returning to New York, Giannotti has joined Esiason on the Carton-less “Morning Show with Boomer,” bringing both insight and his amusing impressions that range from Tony Romo to the Sports Pope himself.
Giannotti had been a rumored candidate to replace Francesa, but he’ll instead remain a morning man, while Carton continues to fight charges that he duped investors in a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme.
