It wasn’t that long ago when black people were mostly Republicans because the GOP was the party of Lincoln.
One of the most prominent black Republicans was the Rev. Martin Luther King Sr. — until his son Martin Luther King Jr. found himself in a Georgia jail in1960 after a civil rights protest, and needed John F. Kennedy’s help to get him out.
Not only did Daddy King vote for Kennedy that November but he helped the Democrat win the black vote, a victory Democrats have enjoyed ever since.
Which brings us to Lavar Ball. Only President Trump could have me writing about Daddy King and Lavar Ball in the same sentence.
Trump tells UCLA players to thank Chinese President for release
But only Lavar Ball could have me saying Trump is right.
Let’s be clear: Trump will never be confused for JFK. But Ball ain’t no Daddy King either.
But in this crazy scenario, they found themselves cast in similar roles. Ball’s son, LiAngelo, a basketball player at UCLA was in a Chinese jail with two teammates on a senseless shoplifting charge. Trump said a few words to Chinese President Xi Jinping and, before you can say fast break, the players were kissing American soil. But Trump wants them to kiss the ring.
“Do you think the three UCLA Basketball Players will say thank you President Trump?” the President tweeted last week. “They were headed for 10 years in jail!”
LaVar Ball should make Donald Trump an honorary ‘Big Baller’
And the three humbled players, LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill and Cody Riley, pucker up and kiss the ring.
Daddy Ball? He says kiss my a–.
“Who?” LaVar Ball told ESPN on Friday, when asked about Trump’s involvement. “What was he over there for? Don’t tell me nothing. Everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out.”
Of course Trump took the bait. He always takes the bait.
Trump fires back at ‘unaccepting’ LaVar Ball on Twitter
“Now that the three basketball players are out of China and saved from years in jail, LaVar Ball, the father of LiAngelo, is unaccepting of what I did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal,” Trump tweeted Sunday. “I should have left them in jail!”
We don’t need a leader who has to pat himself on the back for performing the most basic of presidential tasks.
But if Lavar Ball can’t bring himself to muster an ounce of gratitude, he should have the decency to show a little humility.
That’s what a big baller would do.
