Giants co-owner Mara discusses firing McAdoo, Reese

This is a live updating story from John Mara’s 2 p.m. Giants press conference in East Rutherford.

Stay tuned for the co-owner’s explanation of his decision to fire both GM Jerry Reese and head coach Ben McAdoo, what this means for Eli Manning, and how he intends to repair the broken franchise:

— Mara said he and co-owner Steve Tisch met after the loss in Oakland and agreed to revisit the conversation on Monday morning, and when they talked again agreed it was “pointless to wait any longer to make changes.”

— Mara said his 10:30 a.m. Monday meeting with Reese was “as difficult a meeting as I’ve ever had,” given that Reese rose through the ranks from 1994 as a part-time scout to become a two-time Super Bowl-winning GM.

— Mara said he thanked Reese for everything he’s done and said at some time he’ll end up answering questions on why he let him get away, asked Kevin Abrams to be interim GM and to enter candidacy for the full-time job in 2018.

— Mara said he met with McAdoo and thanked him for handling himself in a professional manner, feels he’ll go on to become a successful head coach.

— Asked Steve Spagnuolo to be interim head coach and to be a candidate in 2018 head coach search if he wishes.

— Mara was adamant he told the staff he wants them to focus on working hard and getting the players ready to play. He said he will not put up with any talk about tanking, expects Giants to go out to try and win these games.

— Mara said the GM search starts right away and that he has asked ex-Giants GM Ernie Accorsi to serve as a consultant in search process, said ideally he would like to have that in place first before a head coach. That’s the ideal scenario.

— Mara said the Eli Manning benching fiasco last week had “no effect whatsoever” on his decision to fire McAdoo. Said “2-10 is 2-10.”

— Would not answer if Manning will go back in as starting QB, said Spagnuolo and others are “still trying to come to grips with the whole thing.”
