BullyGate’s Jonathan Martin detained after threatening gun post

Ex-Miami Dolphin offensive tackle Jonathan Martin set off alarms for high school administrators Friday morning with an Instagram post in which he appeared to threaten a shooting at his alma mater.

Martin, who was picked on by several of his Dolphin teammates during the 2013 BullyGate scandal, posted the photo of a shotgun on a bed with shells scattered around it and a note that said, “when you’re a bully victim & a coward, your options are suicide, or revenge.”

The words #HarvardWestLake — his former Los Angeles high school — #MiamiDolphins appeared on the gun’s stock and barrel along with the names of his former teammate harassers.

Police later detained Martin as he was trying to check himself into a Los Angeles hospital, according to USA Today Sports.

“The individual we believe responsible for the social media post in question has been detained and our investigation is ongoing,” the Los Angeles Police Department said. Martin was later released from police custody, ESPN reported.

The social media handles for Buffalo Bills guard Richie Incognito and Dolphins center Mike Pouncey — who were both found to have harassed Martin — are named in the post, along with two of his former Harvard-Westlake High School classmates.

The school closed both of its campuses in Studio City and Beverly Crest, Calif., on Friday, though the LAPD had said there was “no credible threat.”

Jonathan Martin on bully Incognito: No desire to ever talk to him

“Last evening, we learned an Internet post that mentions Harvard-Westlake by name. Out of an abundance of caution, and because the safety of our students, faculty, and our staff is our top priority, we made the decision to close school today. We are working closely with law enforcement and will share more information when we are available,” administrators said Friday.

The incident comes a little over a week after 17 students and staff were shot to death at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. There has been a spate of school shooting threats across the country, prompting closures, since the Feb. 14 murders.

Martin, who previously revealed he tried to commit suicide multiple times while in the NFL, was the victim in a bullying scandal that rocked the league. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell hired New York attorney Ted Wells to look into shocking claims of locker room abuse in Miami. The investigation found that the offensive tackle was subjected to “a pattern of harassment” by Incognito, Pouncey and current Giants guard John Jerry.

Martin spent three seasons in the NFL, playing for the Dolphins before leaving the team in October 2013. The following March, he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers, where he played one season. Martin retired after the 2014-15 season.

Richie Incognito has had ‘zero conversation’ with Jonathan Martin

In 2015, Martin chronicled his troubled high school years when he felt out of place as “one of just a few minorities,” the Los Angeles Times reported.

The NFL investigation on bullying found that Martin had been receiving treatment for depression since he was a teen.
