The Astros are reportedly going after one of the Yankees’ trade targets: Gerrit Cole.
Houston has engaged in talks with Pittsburgh about dealing the 27-year-old righthander, sources told Yahoo! Sports. One possible return in the trade would be outfielder Derek Fisher, with the website reporting that the Pirates would need righthander Forrest Whitley or outfielder Kyle Tucker “as a centerpiece.”
The Astros are trying to add another starter with former Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel hitting free agency next offseason.
The Daily News reported last month that the Pirates had given up hopes of obtaining Yankees super prospect Gleyber Torres in a trade, making a deal between the two teams seem more feasible. Pittsburgh would instead center a deal around outfielder Clint Frazier and possibly righthander Chance Adams and third base prospect Miguel Andujar.
Yankees need to decide if Gerrit Cole is worth the risk
However, a Yankee source emphasized at the time that a deal was not imminent — and trade rumors have been quiet since then.
As of right now, the Yankees have Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, Sonny Gray, CC Sabathia and Jordan Montgomery in their rotation.
