Ironically, three months ago, Van Wagenen publicly told the Mets it was time to trade ace Jacob deGrom or extend his contract. Now, he needs to know the answer. With David Wright unable to continue playing due to the spine issues that have plagued him over the last three years, is deGrom going to be the face of the franchise the Mets invest in long term? What about the rest of the rotation, which is quickly aging out of that “young stars,” category and becoming more expensive through arbitration? Will the Mets let Zack Wheeler, who is a free agent after this season, walk?
