The Giants enter Thursday’s draft with the No. 2 pick for the first time since 1981, when they selected linebacker Lawrence Taylor. So it is kind of a big deal.
GM Dave Gettleman has made it part of his criteria that whomever they select should be someone they envision putting on a gold jacket in Canton, Ohio someday.
Several names and scenarios have been speculated over the past few months, but here are three players to watch for when the Giants are on the clock:
RB Saquon Barkley, Penn State — With a bevy of quarterbacks available and projected to be top-10 picks, the Giants appear to be leaning toward taking the Penn State running back instead. Barkley would be the conservative choice and Gettleman has made it no secret how he feels about Barkley, calling him a “tremendous talent” at a press conference last week.
Final NFL Mock Draft: Who will the Jets and Giants select?
QB Sam Darnold, USC — If the Giants do decide to opt for a quarterback, it will likely be for the 20-year-old out of USC. The only problem is Darnold could be taken with the top pick by the Browns, but reports on Wednesday suggested that Cleveland still is not sure which quarterback it prefers, which could result on Darnold slipping to the Giants at No. 2.
DE Bradley Chubb, NC State — The Giants could surprise many and opt to bolster their defense by choosing Chubb. Gettleman wants to build the team from the inside out and has a history of being defensive-minded in the first round. In his five years as GM of the Panthers, he selected a defensive lineman twice with a first-round pick, so Chubb remains a possibility.
