Oftentimes, the external noise of construction is incorporated into a dream in an effort to preserve much needed sleep. In this view, the exterior noise was sensed as an invasive presence while asleep, a presence that became the annoying, disturbing, intrusive stranger. This is why the bothersome stranger—the noise—could not be shut out of your room. It was perceived as an invasion of space, a violation of privacy.
