Whether you like your Daiquiri frozen or not, the rum-based drink will instantly transport you to a tropical, sun-drenched beach. So, raise that cocktail high in toast to National Daiquiri Day today.
The classic Daiquiri, made from nothing more than rum, lime juice and sugar then shaken with cracked ice and strained, takes its name from the place it was invented, the mining town of Daiquiri on the southeastern tip of Cuba, according to Liquor.com.
The website says that during the time of the Spanish-American War, in 1898, an American mining engineer by the name of Jennings Cox created the drink to protect his workers from yellow fever. According to Bacardi archivist Juan Bergaz Pessino, both the lime and alcohol were thought to protect against the deadly disease.
This drink is sometimes served frozen, combined and poured from a blender eliminating the need for manual pulverization.
The Hemingway Daiquiri was created at the La Floridita bar in Cuba for Ernest Hemingway. According to Imbibe Magazine, legend has it that the author loved the drink so much that he always ordered a double, lending the cocktail its nickname of Papa Doble.
