ALBANY – It will cost a little less for New Yorkers to stuff themselves silly with turkey this Thanksgiving, a new survey Thursday revealed.
The New York Farm Bureau’s annual Market Basket Survey found that the average cost for a Thanksgiving Day dinner, including a 16-pound turkey, dropped nearly 10% from a year ago.
A dinner that feeds 10 people will cost $44.74, down from $46.63, the survey found.
Overall turkey prices are down about $1.34 per pound in New York State, a 9% drop from 2016, the Farm Bureau reported.

“The dinner price has dropped for a second consecutive year which means New Yorkers can continue to enjoy a reasonably priced Thanksgiving meal,” said Phyllis Couture, chair of the Farm Bureau’s Promotion and Education Committee.
“While farmers continue to struggle with lower commodity prices across the board, American consumers benefit from lower prices at the cash register,” Couture added.

The Farm Bureau’s survey studied prices in various regions around the state for 12 Thanksgiving food items ranging from turkey and rolls to fresh carrots and pumpkin pie.
Surveyors found that the average cost of a frozen, self-basting 16-pound turkey dropped from $22.20 a year ago to $21.36 this year; while the average price of a 14-ounce package of herb-seasoned stuffing remained virtually unchanged at $2.50, a one-cent increase from a year ago.

Big decreases were also found in the average cost of frozen green peas, down from $1.58 per 16-ounce package to $1; and sweet potatoes, down from $1.23 per pound to 96 cents.
Dinner rolls, meanwhile, got more expensive with a package of 12 costing $3.28, up from $2.56 in 2016, according to the study.
Also getting more expensive were pumpkin pie mix, with a 30-ounce can jumping from $2.79 to $2.94; and fresh cranberries, which increased from $2.60 to $2.92 per package.
