South Carolina district offers extra money for math teachers

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — One South Carolina school district is offering a lot of extra money for math teachers to work in 16 high-poverty schools.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the Charleston County School District is offering new math teachers $45,000 to work in some of its schools. That’s about $9,000 more than the typical starting teacher salary in the district.

The new pay scale was approved earlier this month.

Chief human resources officer Bill Briggman said Charleston schools lost nearly half of their math teachers over the past two years. Officials now offer extra money for math teachers to teach another class during their planning period.

A recent report shows that half of the teachers who left the profession in the past year had less than five years of experience.
