An iconic track coach at the Bronx High School of Science has been sacked from his job for making a “rapist” joke at practice.
Ken Miller said Friday he was canned last month for telling girls on the team to “run like a rapist was chasing them” as part of a poorly conceived pep talk.
“I don’t know what I was thinking,” said Miller, who helped launch the Bronx Science girls track program in the 1970’s and had worked at the school as a history teacher and coach since then.
“I told them to run like a rapist was chasing them. But I should’ve said to run like a bear was chasing them,” Miller told the Daily News Friday. “It was so stupid.”
Miller, who is retired and was working as an hourly employee in his capacity as coach, said he was removed from his job over the incident, which occurred off campus at a nearby track in September.
He claims the real reason the city is targeting him is because he reported the abusive actions of another coach. That coach was later terminated.
Education Department spokesman Michael Aciman said Miller’s removal was warranted.
“We take allegations of misconduct seriously,” Aciman said. “Mr. Miller’s behavior was inappropriate and offensive, and he was terminated.”
