Bronx middle school teacher arrested for slapping student

A Bronx teacher with a history of physically punishing students was arrested after cops say he slapped a middle schooler in the face.

Police charged Fatai Okunola, 50, with assault, after a 12-year-old girl accused him of hitting her at Intermediate School 219 in Foxhurst.

The student and her mom called police to the school at about 3:20 p.m. Thursday, alleging the assault happened earlier in the day.

Okunola was reprimanded by a supervisor for using corporal punishment in 2014, and in 2006, the school system suspended him without pay for making inappropriate comments to student and for failing to perform his test proctoring duties, school sources said.

He was issued a desk appearance ticket and released. He did not immediately return a message seeking comment Thursday.

“These troubling alleged actions are completely unacceptable,” said Education Department spokesman Douglas Cohen. “This individual has been removed from the school and reassigned away from students pending the resolution of this criminal matter.”
